HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency says a Superfund cleanup in Lamar County is off to a fast start and may cost less than expected.
The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/t8rXzU), reports that EPA regional official Scott Martin told the county Board of Supervisors that a recent test found far less contaminated water than expected at the former Davis Timber Co.
In 2009, the project was expected to cost $5 million to $6 million, and take years. More recent estimates were $4.5 million over 12 to 14 months.
Martin says removing impounded water was expected to take about 10 months, but may be done in just month, and work might be completed this summer.
The water is contaminated with dioxin and pentachlorophenol from treating pine poles, pilings and timber.
