JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's latest composite score on the ACT college entrance exam was 18.7, below the national score of 21.1 and down from last year's composite of 18.8.
However, state higher education officials noted, the number of students ready for college level work increased in three of four categories: Those ready for English composition rose by 397; algebra by 256 and social studies by 153. The number deemed ready for college biology was down by 102.
Composite scores by subject matter ranged from an 18.2 for math to 18.8 for reading.
Al Rankins, Associate Commissioner of Academic and Student Affairs with the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, says in a news release IHL is working with the state education department to incorporate college readiness standards for mathematics in grades Kindergarten through 12.
