( Hattiesburg , MS ) – May 13, 2010 For the second time in less than 6 months, materials have been stolen from a Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity job site. According to Andrea Dixon, Executive Director, $700 worth of exterior oriented strand board (OSB) was stolen from the Celeste Place subdivision located at 1741Edwards Street over the weekend. The missing OSB was discovered early Tuesday morning, May 11th, by Mike Pascarella, construction manager with Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity. He reported tire tracks leading up to the place the materials were stacked after construction was finished on Saturday, May 8th. All of the leftover OSB was gone. The OSB was purchased for the 2010 Women Build project currently underway to construct the home of Marcy Taylor and her family. “We know that most people are experiencing financial difficulties right now, however, this puts Habitat in an almost impossible situation. Donations have decreased because people seem to have less money to donate. Therefore, every dollar we receive is especially precious right now. Having materials stolen from Habitat forces us to spend dollars designated for salaries and other vital family services expenses to replace these items” said Lee Anne Venable, Board President of Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity.
In early February, an entire trailer was also stolen from the Celeste Place subdivision that contained nearly $9,000.00 dollars of equipment, including a 10’ Pace enclosed trailer, 10’ metal break, 2- 20’extension ladders, 2- 10’ step ladders, 20’ aluminum walk board, 16’ aluminum walk board, kitchen sink, 20 galloon air compressor, 30 galloons of paint, 2 rolls of house wrap, 25 door knobs, 100 plumbing fittings, 100 pieces of electrical supplies, towel racks, and one set of ladder jacks.
If you have information on the location of these stolen items, please contact the Habitat office staff at 601-582-4663 or you can call the Hattiesburg Police Department at 601-544-7900. Anyone interested in donating tools or materials can do so by bringing them to the Habitat office located at 5191 Hwy 42. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help us replace these materials, you can drop off your financial contribution at the Habitat office or by going online at www.hattiesburghabitat.org/donate.
