GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - The University of Southern Mississippi
will kickoff its celebration of its 100th anniversary later this
month in Jackson followed by 40 events scheduled in Hattiesburg and
on the Gulf Coast through December.
USM President Martha Saunders says the school wants to
commemorate the centennial all year and use the events to create
interest in the school and draw more students and faculty.
For example, each sport will have a reunion for former players.
Saunders tells the Sun Herald that other events include a rodeo,
oral history roundtable, lecture series and music presentations.
Saunders has three goals for the centennial - increase awareness
of USM history, increase participation in events and increase
positive feelings toward the university.
