"I knew that one day I'd get to this point and the day finally arrived."
Martez Smith wasn't able to walk across the stage Friday...he is just thankful he was able to attend.
"The Lord blessed me."
Smith's recovery is slow but he feels improvement.
"People don't really know it but the Lord blessed me a whole lot with different feelings that's coming back to my body and I got all the faith in the world that he's gonna bless me to walk again."
Smith - a linebacker for the golden eagles - won't be playing in the Beef O' Brady's bowl game December 21st.
"I will be at the bowl game cheering the Southern Miss eagles on."
At today's graduation ceremony...his classmates were cheering for Smith.
"It's real special, because, you know, back in 2006, you know, I came here to play football but at the same time I knew Southern Miss had a high graduation rate."
A rate Smith is helping to increase.
