Fire Destroys Soso Home in Jones County

A raging inferno at a two story metal clad home owned by Raymond Crosby at 1404 Hwy. 28 just west of Soso kept volunteer firefighters from four departments busy for hours Thursday evening. Initial reports called in to Jones County 911 dispatchers at 8:19 P.M. by a passerby advised the address was 414 Hwy. 28 which sent responding fire units to an address between Calhoun and Soso looking for the fire when the fire was actually north of Soso on Hwy. 28. Soso firefighters located the burning structure shortly after Calhoun and Pleasant Ridge units advised no fire was found in the 400 block of Hwy. 28 and an agressive firefight began.

The home was burning heavily on the second floor with flames pouring out of the windows and a partial metal roof collapse in progress as firefighters began their attack. Fire engines, tankers and rescue units from Soso, Calhoun, Pleasant Ridge and Hebron responded to the fire along with units from the Jones County Sheriff's Office, Soso Police Department, EMServ Ambulance Service, Mississippi Power Company and Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna. The intense heat from the fire being held inside the metal structure combined with heavy smoke conditions complicated efforts by firefighters to reach and extinguish burning areas of the home. Initially it was feared that residents might be inside the burning home as a vehicle was parked in front of the home. It was confirmed a short time later however that the residents had left earlier in the evening. Firefighters conducted both exterior and interior fire attack operations and at points during the fire attack were flowing hundreds of gallons of water a minute into the burning structure.

Soso Fire Chief Glenn Musgrove served as the Incident Commander during the fire attack and subsequent salvage and overhaul operation while Calhoun Fire Chief Joey Blackwell commanded interior fire attack operations. Fire investigators are expected on the scene on Wednesday to attempt to determine a cause of the fire. Hwy. 28 West was closed to one lane of traffic for several hours during the incident as fire apparatus had to stage on the highway. There were no reports of injuries to any emergeny services personnel during the incident. Damage to the home is considered to be extensive and the home is likely to be deemed a total loss. Fire units began to be released to go back in service near midnight although Soso VFD was on the scene until 5:30 A.M. on Thursday ensuring no further flareups occurred.
