Hattiesburg police arrested Antonio Lee, 20, of Hattiesburg, MS after he led police on an almost 30-mile police chase in an attempt to avoid apprehension.
On June 10, 2009 around 1:00 p.m., a member of the Hattiesburg Police Department’s Interdiction Team was monitoring traffic in the west bound lane of Highway 98 (near its intersection with Highway 49 South) when he attempted to stop a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria for a traffic violation. The driver of the Crown Victoria, later identified as Antonio Lee, began to accelerate after seeing the officer activate his unit’s blue lights.
Lee refused to stop for police and led officers on a nearly 30-mile pursuit which ended near the Lumberton, MS exit (Hwy 59/Hwy13) where Lee surrendered. Lee’s vehicle reached speeds of over 110 mph during the chase. Lee was taken into custody without incident along with another male passenger who was also in the vehicle.
Lee was transported to the Forrest County Regional Jail where he was charged with (1) felony count of eluding. The other male passenger was questioned and later released without charge. Authorities are still unsure of what motivated Lee to run from the police.
Law enforcement officers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Forrest County Sherriff’s Department, Lumberton Police and Purvis Police assisted in the chase.
No one was injured or property damaged during the incident.
