OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Federal grants totaling $1.3 million will be used to build a 5,260-square-foot red snapper laboratory on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The laboratory is one of several facilities being built at the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs.

William Hawkins, director of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, said the site at Cedar Point will double from 100 to 200 acres. The Cedar Point site is located east of Gulf Islands National Seashore park.

The current red snapper laboratory is housed in a temporary wooden structure.

By March 2010, the new building will be the focus of scientific research into red snapper. It will be built using National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration grant money.
