Jeff Davis Co. Authorities say 20-year old Melvin Warner was picked up in Hattiesburg Tuesday morning. He is being transported back to Jefferson Davis County where he will face a murder charge.

Warner is accused of shooting and killing 19-year old Preston Brown Monday afternoon at the Bassfield Apartments in Bassfield.

Coroner Greg Blackwell says 19-year old Preston Brown died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigator Ronnie Barnes, of the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Department, says it appears Brown was involved in an argument with the suspect. The argument started at a nearby Texaco Gas Station and then moved to the Bassfield Apartments.

Brown was then shot and killed. Police received the call around 2:45 Monday afternoon.

Authorities believe Warner was visiting his girlfriend in Hattiesburg when he was picked up.

Also working this case are the Bassfield Police Department, Prentiss Police Department, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.
