Bombs uncovered during pipeline excavation

PACHUTA, Miss. (AP) - Workers digging part of a natural gas pipeline discovered about 20 small unexploded white phosphorous bombs dating back to World War II.

Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp says an Oklahoma pipeline crew Tuesday night uncovered the bombs during work on the pipeline between the Barnett community and Pachuta. The site was about two miles from U.S. Highway 11 and less than a quarter of a mile from Interstate 59.

Kemp says the area near Pachuta is an old World War II bombing and training range. The range covers about 10,000 acres and was closed at the end of the war. The area has been under private ownership ever since.

The U.S. Army Ordinance Disposal Unit from Camp Shelby participated in removing the bombs.
